It was not unusual to see elephants from the neighbouring Hippodrome circus being exercised on the roads surrounding St. John’s. Carole Evans, who ran a guest house on St. John’s Terrace, told us the story of the circus elephant breaking the wall at St. John’s (see Facebook post no. 62)
Inspired by this story and local artist Peter Rodulfo’s painting ‘Returning The Elephants 2018’; the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival Elephants passing St. John’s, we created a collection of collaged artworks based around Peter's drawing with students from Woodlands Primary Academy, Bradwell, (see blog) which will be exhibited alongside Peter’s painting ‘Returning The Elephants 2018’, at our display at Great Yarmouth Library, the Stories of St. John’s exhibition opens on Tuesday 23rd April – Friday 3rd May 2019.
Stories of St. Johns spotted the painting ‘Returning the Elephants’ when local artist Peter Rodulfo kindly let us display the St. John’s Roll of Honour and poppies, made by Edward Worlledge Ormiston Academy year 6 students, in the window of Skippings Gallery on Armitice Day during his November exhibition last year.
The painting features the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival elephants parading past St. Johns Church in June 2018, come and see the original painting at the Stories of St. John’s Final Exhibition at Great Yarmouth Library from Tuesday 23rd April - Wednesday 1st May 2019 11am - 2pm daily (except Sunday).
Peter has painted two new pieces (see below) these will be on sale at the exhibition with some of the proceeds going to the St. John's fund.
The exhibition will be open to the public between 11am and 2pm daily except Sunday. VIP group visits can be arranged out of these hours by contacting Project Co-ordinator Carol Desborough at Carol.gypt@gmail.com
