In response to a memory by a former member of St. John's congregation, the students of Woodlands Primary Academy, Bradwell were visited on Tuesday 2nd April by Carol Desborough of the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust and University of Suffolk student Emma Scales to take part in a collaging session which will be included in an upcoming exhibition ‘The Stories of St John’s’ at Great Yarmouth Library between 23rd April - 1st May 2019, 11am-2pm.
Children from years 3-6 created colourful collages using a selection of papers including pieces of prayers from the World War 1 Army Prayer books and hymn sheets found at the church. Local Artist Peter Rodulfo created an illustration from Carole Evans memory for the students to collage. The artworks created by the students will be exhibited alongside Peter Rodulfo’s painting ‘Returning the Elephants 2018’; which depicts the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival Elephants passing St. John’s church in Great Yarmouth.
The children were told the story of the 'Elephant and the Polo' and were shown the original Baptism Rolls from the church along with cleaning tools used in the conservation process and the preservation boxes. They were allowed to gently use the tools on the precious items.
The children enjoyed exploring the heritage items and during the session they also studied the names listed. Each child chose names from the list and added these to a display board as a way of remembering local residents of the past. The students chose their favourite name to title their elephant collage because an elephant never forgets
‘The Stories of St John’s’ exhibition is open to the public at Great Yarmouth Library between 23rd April - 1st May 2019, 11am-2pm (except Sundays).
